Premiere of ‘2 Herbert Songs’

Rehearsals are well underway for the 2 Herbert Songs, based on poetry from George Herbert’s The Temple.  Gloriane Vasso, a mezzo, commissioned the works last year, and I’m looking forward to the premiere here in a few weeks.  The two settings, ‘Easter-Wings’ and ‘The Dawning,’ are set for mezzo and string quartet (here Faith Strickler, Heidi Myrick, Lauren Holland, and Chris Erickson).  Each of the two songs alternates styles as the texts change moods. They begin slowly, almost somberly, then launch into a contrasting style: ‘Easter-Wings’ into a lilting 3/4, and ‘The Dawning’ into a driving ostinato.

The 2 Herbert Songs will be premiered by Gloriane Vasso Saturday April 19 at 5:00 PM in the War Memorial Chapel, on the campus of Bob Jones University.
